How to Apply Thread Tape to a Pipe

Plumbing Service How-To Videos

Applying thread tape is very simple. The threads on a pipe of any size need to have some sort of tape or thread sealant on it. Using tape helps it seal up and helps if you need to take it apart again.

Follow these steps to apply thread tape to a pipe:

  1. Hold the tape with one finger to keep it down and start wrapping
  2. Wrap the thread tape around the pipe’s threads
  3. With thread sealant tape, you need to wrap it at least 3 times. A lot of people do more than that, but you don’t necessarily need to do that
  4. Grab the end and pull it to rip the tape. Make sure the end is secure on the pipe
