Frequently Asked Questions
Can I prevent sewer water from coming up the drain?
If a back up is due to the over growth of roots in the sewer, you can do a “preventative maintenance”. The frequency of this service will depend on the frequency of past back ups.
Do you drain clean grease traps?
Yes, one of the commercial services we offer is to snake a grease trap line.
What are some of the residential services you offer?
Whether you have a toilet running, a backing up sink drain, clogged shower drains, or problems with any water drain, Garvin’s can handle the job.
Do you offer a sewer camera?
Yes. We encourage objective second opinions if someone has instructed you to get a drain replacement or sewer replacement. Please call us and learn more about the “red flags” of replacement fraud, and don’t be taken advantage of. see our blog on sewer camera scams
There are lots of names for drain cleaning. What exactly is it?
It is called pipe plumbing, drain snake, sewer plumbing, plumbing snake, rooting out, reeming out, roto-rooter and more. Basically, a tightly wound cable kept on a reel is equipped with blades and pushed through the line. The blades rotate along the inside of the pipes, cutting away any debris in the line and pushing it to its exit. When an overgrowth of debris is in a line, it restricts water’s passage, causing slow drains or sewer water back-ups. Drain cleaning clears the clogged drain.
How can I help prevent clogged drains?
Catch pipe-clogging hair, lotion and soap by keeping them out of the drain by using a strainer, and clean the strainer regularly.
Put a trashcan in the bathroom near the toilet: diapers, feminine products and even facial tissue don’t belong in the toilet.
Stringy food items and grease don’t belong in the kitchen sink. Pour fats and cooking oils in a fat disposal jar, not down the drain where they can solidify.
I have a funny/sewer smell… any suggestions?
Most of the time, that sewer smell is the result of a dry trap seal. Traps are designed to stop odors from entering the house when they are wet. Try running water in every drain at least once a month.
To freshen a garbage disposal, run some ice cubes and citrus rinds through it periodically with cool water.
Should I be doing any maintenance?
Be sure to change your furnace's filter regularly.
If you tend to have a problem with roots in your line, consider a preventative maintenance sewer cleaning service to prevent a back-up.
Check your air-conditioning unit or evaporative cooler for debris.
How can I prevent frozen pipes in the winter?
The trick is to try to catch it before the cold weather hits. Pipes that are in unheated areas, such as crawlspaces, on north-facing walls and in garages, are the most likely to freeze. Try to insulate them or create a temperature in the area of no less than 55°F. Drain sprinkler lines and outdoor water faucets. In extreme cold, allow cold water to drip from the faucet that's served by exposed pipes. Remove your water hose from the outdoor faucet.
